Nostalgia attack! I knew it was coming since I ordered the book myself, yet I had no idea the flood of memories that would appear once I opened the package. Wow. Within seconds I was a kid in the second grade again, my mind wondering if I would be able to figure out the correct sequence of pages to get to the true ending of The Mystery of Chimney Rock. Back then answer was no. During reading time in school and at home I never did make it to the one true sought after ending of this Choose Your Own Adventure title, nor do I believe I ever made it to the end of my other favorite title, one that focused on being a ninja (been trying to figure out the title so I can order it, but have had no luck thus far). That isn't to say I never made it out of the haunted house alive, I just never got to that one perfect ending that all these books contained. Hopefully that failure will soon be rectified. I had thought it would be the other night while I was babysitting a friends kids, but nope, after two hours of reading I still couldn't get the right sequence of events and had to give up, my ego completely shattered with how many times I had died within that house.
Speaking of dying, I have to wonder if these books would have had such endings if they had been printed today? It seems we as a society are way more protective of young kids than we were back then, and that endings resulting in the readers death might be frowned upon by schools and parents. Personally, I wouldn't have an issue with my kids reading these, if I had kids, and feel we have reached the point of absurdity in regards to what we shield children from, but that's just me. I am thankful that I grew up in a time when this wasn't the case, a time when books like this were available to me.
And now it's time to see if I can't figure out the right path once and for all. Anyone else ever solve this one? Whoever had the book before me checked off good choices, but so far none of them have led me in the right direction.
William: I was a diehard Choose-Your-Own-Adventure junkie back in the day, and I remember this one (though I don't recall if I ever found the correct path to get to the true ending). I do, however, remember one that involved alien spacecraft, and my friend and I could never get to the true end, no matter what choices we made. So we FOUND the page that the true ending was on, then went page-by-page looking for instructions that told you to turn to that specific page. There were none, meaning that somewhere along the way, a serious mistake was made, and getting to the true ending was an outright impossibility.
ReplyDeleteAin't that a bitch?
Oh, and is THIS the ninja book you're looking for? It says that it's #16 in the series, published in 2007, but don't let that fool you. It appears that it was originally published as #66 in 1987.

Wow, that really isn't fair! LOL. You know, I found the page in this copy as well while flipping through it, but I didn't read it or look at the page number, so I'm still not sure how to get there. I was tempted though, boy was I. I'm going to give it a couple more attempts.
ReplyDeleteI checked out that book copy you linked too and I don't think that is the one I remember. For some reason I have an image in my mind of a young man doing some sort of flying kick across the cover with ninjas in the background. I can't seem to find that image anywhere, however. I think I will just have to buy them all.
